No matter how much experience I accumulate shopping for purses, it seems like I never get any
better. In fact, saying that I’m shopping for a purse is inaccurate, because I never come home with
anything but confusion, stress, and an endless list of maybes. Its intimidating standing in front of
a towering wall of leather and suede, being forced to make a decision that will seemingly affect
the course of the rest of my life. Like a modern day Indiana Jones deciding on which one sticks
out as the true Holy Grail. Needless to say, I wouldn’t measure my intuition on the same level as
Indiana’s.
It’s impossible to stay current with the ever-changing trends. The rules of fashion seem to
increase day by day and there’s no end to their particularity. How am I to know if a certain color of
leather clashes with my skin tone? How am I to realize that a certain purse’s strap doesn’t
complement the way I walk? And how long will I be able to be in style with my purchase. How long
will it be “in season.”? Come to think of it, how long is a fashion season anyways? Does it run
side by side with winter, summer, spring, and fall? Or does it go on a separated chic system?
Are some fashion seasons comparatively harder on my car?
Okay, so I’m getting a little off track, but that’s not irrelevant because usually on my purse quest
I’ve taken a similar turn. By this time, I’m thinking about taking a nap in the store’s mattress
section. I’ve given up. There are so many purses in this world, and it can be overbearing to
choose the single one that fits you best.
Why not just add something of your own to a purse, and let that do the talking? Let it be loud and
clear why this purse fits your arm perfectly. The world is drowning in black and brown purses,
and though one might have finer stitching, or have a more reliable clasp, or the stamp of a brand
name, there’s another one on the block that looks just like it.
I’ve met plenty of different women throughout my life, so I’ve met plenty of different purses.
Whenever I join friends for lunch, or sit down for a meeting with a client, a purse is sure to follow.
But it hardly ever is substantial enough to strike conversation. At least not a conversation that
extends behind the “Hey, nice purse” formalities. I have, however, initiated meaningful
conversation because of what I had attached to my purse.
I would consider my purse to be average. Nothing to flashy, nothing too expensive, and nothing
too chic. Nevertheless, I’ve started more conversations with it than with anything else I wear or
carry. Dangling from my bag is a glass floral heart with a sterling silver charm boasting the word
“Mom.” It adds a flare to my purse that separates it from the crowd, and people really seem to
notice. After they mention the charm, we usually ease into talking about what it means to me. It’s
a natural beginning to talk about family, values, and things that really matter. It’s amazing the
power one word has.
Italian leather doesn’t quite have the same effect. Instead of going to store after store, looking for
that perfect fit, why not just attach a little bit of your personality to the bag you already have.
